Lower Eastside Girls Club
Arguably our most treasured partnership Solitary Gardens’ has been working with the Lower East Side Girls club since 2015! LESGC connects girls and young women to healthy and successful futures. Our state-of-the-art center offers a safe haven with programs in the arts, sciences, leadership, entrepreneurship, and wellness for middle and high school girls. Programs are offered at no cost to girls and their families. The Girls Club has made several trips down to New Orleans, volunteered at our Andry Street Site, and in September 2018 we finally got to build a garden bed on their rooftop garden! Consistent with the mission of LESGC the Solitary Garden will host flowers chosen by Incarcerated Mothers. Spend time with their WGRL Radio Podcast Sowing Seeds of Hope, which documents the collaboration.
Building the Bed..
Building a Solitary Garden on rooftop in NYC is no small feat. We had to haul bags of lime, concrete, bagasse, cotton and the garden form up and down stairs and elevators. We had a rockstar team of women and girls to aid in the building and beautiful several days to make it happen. The work paid off and was punctuated with a gorgeous public event organized by A Blade of Grass, where we got spend time with Susan Sarandon, Colin Kaepernick, Eric Reid and many of the future girl stars of LESGC. We are particularly grateful to Erikka James, Kelly Webb and Rishauna Zumberg for facilitating the magic and of course LESGC’s Garden MOM Jennifer for being the love needed to make things grow.
